Football Roundup: Broncos Stage Fourth-Quarter Rally Against Eagles, Ravens Endure Record Home-field Loss
Denver Broncos 21β17 Philadelphia Eagles
Denver's quarterback connected with a short touchdown pass and JK Dobbins added another rushing score in the fourth quarter as the Denver Broncos overcame a two-touchdown disadvantage to deliver the Philadelphia Eagles their first loss of the campaign. Denver's defense deflected the Eagles quarterback's last-gasp pass on the contest's last snap to send the reigning title holders to just their second loss in their previous 22 outings. Denver (three wins and two losses) got fortunate in their comeback when the Philadelphia had a late fourth-down conversion called back on an illegal shift penalty whistled against star ball carrier Barkley.
Texans Dominate Depleted Ravens in Record Win
Houston's quarterback passed for 244 passing yards and four touchdowns, and the Texans (2-3) cruised to a 44-10 win over a depleted Baltimore team, matching both the most lopsided road win in Texans' history and the most lopsided home loss in Ravens' history. Baltimore (one win and four losses) were without star signal-caller Jackson, and that was far from their only problem. Defensive standouts Kyle Hamilton, Roquan Smith and Marlon Humphrey all were absent, and the Ravens already were depleted on defense because of a cervical issue that ended the defensive lineman's season. The Ravens were also without Pro Bowl blocker Ricard and offensive lineman Stanley.
Colts Rout Raiders in One-Sided Affair
Indianapolis' running back ran for three rushing scores and a two-point conversion, and the quarterback threw two touchdown passes as the Indianapolis Colts overwhelmed the Las Vegas Raiders. This decisive advantage was Indy's largest since 2013. Jones finished 20 of 29 for 212 passing yards and improved to 4-1 as a starter this year, exceeding his combined victory total over the previous two years with the New York Giants. The running back rushed 17 times for 66 rushing yards and caught three passes for 20 yards. The Colts turned a blocked punt, two interceptions and a turnover on downs into TDs. Las Vegas dropped to 4-1.
Dallas Cowboys 37-22 New York Jets
Dallas' quarterback threw four scoring throws, guiding the Dallas Cowboys to a comfortable win over the Jets. Dallas put points on the board on two 90-yard drives in the second quarter, despite missing key linemen on the blocking unit. Javonte Williams gained 135 rushing yards and a score and also hauled in a receiving touchdown. Dallas, now 2-2-1, rebounded from a high-scoring draw against the Packers last week. The Jets are still without a victory at zero wins and five losses in their new coach's inaugural year as head coach.
Minnesota Vikings 21β17 Cleveland Browns
Vikings receiver Addison caught a short touchdown pass from the quarterback with under half a minute left to secure the Vikings a win over the Browns at the UK venue. The 10-play, 80-yard drive gave the Vikings (3-2) a much-needed win on their overseas journey, which started with a 24-21 loss to the Pittsburgh in Dublin last Sunday. This also marred Dillon Gabriel's debut as starter, as the Cleveland rookie positioned his squad (one win and four losses) in position to win by throwing two scores. Another first-year player Quinshon Judkins gained 110 rushing yards on 23 carries. Wentz overcame an arm issue that temporarily forced him out and led two scoring drives in the latter half.
Miami Dolphins 24-27 Carolina Panthers
Carolina's quarterback threw for two scores and Rico Dowdle rushed for 206 yards and a score as the Carolina Panthers rallied past the Dolphins in Charlotte. The quarterback's short pass to the first-year receiver with 1:59 to go gave the Panthers (2-3) the decisive advantage as they matched the biggest rally to secure victory in franchise history by erasing a large deficit. The QB had a poor start, but he finished 19-for-30 passing for 198 yards with one pick. Dowdle, replacing injured Chuba Hubbard, did his damage on the ground on 23 carries, falling four yards shy of the team's all-time rushing mark. Miami's quarterback threw 27 passes out of 36 for 256 yards with three scores and receiver Waddle gained 110 receiving yards on six receptions and scored a score, but the Miami (one win and four losses) fell to 0-3 in away contests.
Saints Secure First Win Under New Coach
New Orleans' quarterback passed for a long score to receiver Shaheed, defensive back Howden returned a fumble the length of the field for a touchdown, and the Saints defeated the error-prone Giants for the New Orleans' initial win under first-year head coach Moore. The QB secured his maiden win in 11 professional starts, throwing for 225 yards without any mistakes. New York's first-year signal-caller Jaxson Dart, who secured his debut last week, threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns, but also turned the ball over on three occasions. The Giants gave up possession on five separate plays in all, with none worse than when Bryan Bresee forced a fumble from running back Cam Skattebo, resulting in Howden's touchdown. Both teams are one win and four losses.
